GEO Guide
What is Generative Engine Optimization?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your website easier for AI search engines to read, summarize, and cite. It is to AI search what SEO is to traditional search — a set of technical and content practices that increase your visibility in AI-generated answers.
What makes GEO different from SEO
Traditional SEO optimizes for ranking positions in a list of blue links. GEO optimizes for being cited inside an AI-generated answer — which often has no ranked list at all. AI systems synthesize information from multiple sources and attribute it, so the goal shifts from ranking to being cited.
The core GEO checklist
GEO covers: (1) crawler access — allowing AI bots in robots.txt; (2) machine-readable metadata — JSON-LD, meta tags, llms.txt; (3) content structure — direct answers, FAQ sections, clear headings; (4) authority signals — author attribution, dates, citations, entity clarity.
Which AI search engines matter most
ChatGPT Search (OpenAI), Perplexity AI, Google AI Overviews (Gemini), and Bing Copilot are the four most important AI search products today. Each has its own crawlers and retrieval logic. A complete GEO strategy accounts for all four.
GEO is not the same as prompt engineering
Prompt engineering is about crafting inputs to AI models. GEO is about making your public web content more accessible and understandable to AI systems when they crawl the web. GEO is a publisher-side practice, not a user-side one.

Is GEO replacing SEO?
No — at least not yet. Traditional search (Google, Bing) still drives the majority of web traffic. GEO is an emerging complement to SEO. The technical practices (JSON-LD, meta tags, crawlability) overlap significantly, so a well-optimized site for Google is often already partly optimized for AI search.
How do I measure GEO performance?
GEO measurement is still evolving. Today: track how often your site is cited in AI answers (manually or with brand monitoring tools), monitor referral traffic from AI search tools, and run citation readiness scans to catch technical issues.
