Google-Extended (user-agent: Google-Extended) was introduced in 2023 to give publishers control over whether Google uses their content to train AI models and improve Gemini. If you block Google-Extended while allowing Googlebot, your pages still rank on Google Search — but may not appear in Gemini AI answers.

Is Google-Extended the same as Googlebot?
No. Googlebot crawls for Google Search rankings. Google-Extended is an additional crawler for Google's AI products (Gemini, AI Overviews). You can block one without affecting the other.
If I block Google-Extended, will my rankings drop?
No. Blocking Google-Extended does not affect Googlebot or your organic search rankings. It only affects Google AI products (Gemini, AI Overviews). This is by design — Google separated the crawlers specifically so publishers retain control.
